Meet Tom Hart

I ran for Mayor four years ago promising to lower taxes, because our millage rate was 8.5 mills – the highest property taxes in North DeKalb. Today, the millage rate is even higher at 10 mills! While our taxes are being raised, the current mayor and city council gave themselves a big raise and family insurance benefits. If elected, I will endeavor to reduce our property taxes and cut unnecessary fees and expenses from our budget.

Schools
DeKalb has failed us with our public schools. As a former middle and high school teacher, I know we must find other solutions to improving our schools so that we can keep residents here for the long-term and increase property values. We must partner with local non-profits to beautify our schools and make them more appealing to parents, educators, and students. We must increase school quality, local access, and after school opportunities for children in Doraville. And, most importantly, the residents of this community need to be informed of the proposed changes by the School Board. Knowledge of what’s happening will allow us a better opportunity to participate in the process.

Sound Economics
We need to better manage the City’s money. We issue bonds and offer incentives, but we still don’t seem to get anything in return! We need to attract high-quality development rather subsidizing slum housing. If elected, I would prevent any spending that would burden Doraville’s taxpayers.

Ethics & Transparency
We used to be a City of Ethics, yet we haven’t had an Ethics Commission in six years. The City has paid settlement fees for lawsuits over improper meetings and the process by which they’ve been conducted. Decisions are a “done deal” before the meeting is even held without any regard for public input. Contracts, such as the current waste management bid, are granted under the table without an appropriate bidding process. I would return the city to open, public meetings and be more accessible to the media. I will also make sure our city is responsive to small business owners, not just big developers.

Tom's Priorities
New leadership, new Doraville.

Property Taxes

We have the highest property taxes in North DeKalb, including Atlanta and Decatur. At the same time, the current mayor and city council gave themselves a big raise. The city takes in twice or more dollars per citizen as the surrounding cities yet they are out of money.

If elected, I will cut unnecessary fees,  and reduce property taxes by 25% dropping the millage rate from 10 mils to 7.5 mils. The homestead EXEMPTION from $25,000 to $50,000. While my opponents want to change the charter to allow an  50% increase from 10 mils to 15 mils.

Schools

DeKalb has failed us with our public schools. As a former middle and high school teacher, I know we must find other solutions to improving our schools so that we can keep residents here for the long-term and increase property values. Same house in Chamblee or Dunwoody worth $100,000 plus more due to better school selection.

We must partner with local non-profits to beautify our schools and make them more appealing to parents, educators, and students.

We must fight for increase school quality, local access, and after school opportunities for children in Doraville.

Sound Economics

We must stop the  TAD junk bonds which could bankrupt our city, tax dollars spent on million dollar self inflicted lawsuits.

I would also seek high-quality development rather subsidizing slum housing, over leveraged low quality developer schemes.

If elected, I would prevent any spending that would burden Doraville’s taxpayers.

Ethics & Transparency

The city closed its ethics commision for 6 years and finally replaced it with its city attorney and buddies. Same group being sued in the cracked driveway lawsuit!

If elected, I would return the city to open, public meetings and be more accessible to the media. All bids should opened during the public council meetings.  Stop the hot Catered meals to officials during council meetings and start catering to the people of Doraville. This starts with the Mayors office open 5 days a week!

I will also make sure our city is responsive to small business owners, not just big, fat cat  developers, car dealers, and strip mall owners.
